Humoral Responses of Smooth Muscle from Rabbit Subarachnoid A rtery Compared to Kidney, Mesentery, Lung, Heart, and Skin Vascular Smooth Muscle • Smooth muscle strips from rabbit subarachnoid arteries did not respond to catecholamines in concentrations which caused strips from skin, mesentery, and kidney vessels to contract. The strips from subarachnoid arteries responded to serotonin, histamine, and angiotensin II but not to bradykinin, acetylcholine, methacholine, and adenosine phosphate compounds. Heart and lung vascular strips did not respond to catecholamines but responded to acetylcholine; cardiac strips responded to dilute methacholine. Lung strips often failed to respond to histamine in usual concentrations and did respond to bradykinin. The subarachnoid strips had a distinctive pattern of response as compared to vascular tissue from other organs. Results of other isolated vessel studies are reviewed along with pertinent investigations of cerebral autoregulation, vasospasm, and autonomic nerves. The possible significance of these findings is discussed. Additional

Effect of nicotinate ester, acetylcholine, and other vasodilating agents on cutaneous and mesenteric vascular smooth muscle.

Vasodilating agents were tested on smooth-muscle strips of small arterial blood vessels of dog and rabbit skin and mesentery, and two patterns of reaction were demonstrated. The type 1 vasodilating agents, for example nicotinate, caused relaxation of contracted strips or blocked their contraction. The type 2 vasodilating compounds, histamine, choline esters, and bradykinin, either caused contra...

The role of autophagy in advanced glycation end product-induced proliferation and migration in rat vascular smooth muscle cells

Objective(s): To investigate the role of autophagy in advanced glycation end products (AGEs)-induced proliferation and migration in rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs).Materials and Methods: After culture, VSMCs were treated with 0, 1, 10, and 100 μg/ml concentrations of AGEs. Autophagy specific protein light chain 3 (LC3)-I/II was determined by western blotting, autophagosomes were observ...

Histamine potentiation of nerve- and drug-induced responses of a rabbit cerebral artery.

Rabbit basilar artery rings are normally relatively unresponsive to transmural stimulation of their sympathetic nerve supply. However, in the presence of histamine (0.55 muM), contractile responses to nerve stimulation were markedly increased. Norepinephrine and serotonin concentrations that produce 50% of a maximum contractile response (ED50) were considerably decreased in the presence of hist...

The Effect of Adiponectin on Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) in Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells

Background & Aims: Atherosclerosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Adiponectin reducesthe risk of heart disease, and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is involved in the formation and development of atherosclerotic plaque. The aim of this study was the investigation of the effect of adiponectin on MMP-9 gene expression. It seems this hormone can reduce the risk of atherosclerosis ...
